Role The Quality Assurance Scientist (QAS) will perform various assignments including but not limited to quality audits, running scientific trials, conducting DNA extractions and PCR tests, developing and maintaining databases, collecting, analyzing and communicating data of varying complexity to key stakeholders across the company. In addition, the QAS will be expected to develop methods for improving current manufacturing processes, identifying product defects, conducting routine quality audits and safety inspections of the facility, and provide technical support to production staff regarding quality issues with biological products. Primary Duties and Responsibilities • Complete various laboratory experiments to test scientific hypotheses relating to improving quality in manufacturing processes and biological control products. • Perform routine sampling of biological control products to monitor the adherence to environmental, microbiological, or health guidelines. • Perform quick checks on products received upon arrival and provide standard reports of the findings. • Visualize QC data by means of sample trends and statistics, analyze sample trends and report findings to direct supervisor/manager. • Implement local audits, evaluate, and communicate results to direct supervisor/manager. • Configure and operate laboratory instruments such as stereo microscopes, compound microscopes, moisture analyzer, pipettes, balance, and other equipment and be able to troubleshoot breakdowns and perform preventative maintenance, calibrating, etc. • Conduct weekly sampling of final product to ensure standards are being met. Perform routine testing for product release and stability studies. • Perform routine procedures, sample collections, and testing to monitor adherence to environmental, microbiological, or health guidelines. • Independently identify areas for process or product improvement; conceives possible remediation action and works cross-functionally to test and implement solutions. • Develop standard operating protocols, modify techniques, maintain and update the written form of this material. • Troubleshoot technical problems and provide technical support to production staff regarding quality issues with biological products. • Provide Quality support to key stakeholders at a global level. • Performs all other related duties as assigned. Requirements: Skills and Qualifications • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. • Communicate effectively; both verbally and written in English. • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word). • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general scientific research and technical procedures. • Ability to compose scientific reports, business correspondence, and SOPs/protocols. • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public. • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables; statistical analysis skills are necessary. • Ability to perform laboratory tests such as DNA extractions and Polymerase Chain reactions. Education and Experience • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, or a closely related field; M.S. is preferred; or 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and similar experience • 1+ years' experience working in a life science/biomedical lab environment using standard equipment and analytical tools. • Advanced knowledge of quality analyses. • Experience conducting husbandry of live animals and/or rearing of insects in a lab setting. • Experience using statistical software packages (i.e., Minitab, R, etc.) to analyze data sets of varying complexity. Working Conditions • General office/production/laboratory environment: works generally at a desk in a well-lit, air-conditioned cubicle/office, with moderate noise levels. • Occasional travel to other Koppert locations (domestic and international). • Regular exposure to bumble bees and live insects. Physical Requirements • Regularly involves talking or listening, sitting, and the use of hands and fingers. • Ability to travel (air and ground) up to 10% of the time. • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds, and occasionally lift up to fifty (50) pounds. • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally bend, lift, crouch, reach, stoop and/or kneel, push, and/or pull. • Ability to endure heat or excessively cold conditions for a period of time. • Ability to control emotions under various levels of pressures, stress, and fast paced activities.
