Job Description The part time Academic Counselor position is necessary to continue providing high quality academic advising and student support programming. The Department of Bioengineering undergraduate program has grown by approximately 25% over the past three academic years, to a total of 281 current majors to begin the 2025-26 academic year, with an expected total undergraduate cohort exceeding 300 students after the Department's spring admission cycle. The Academic Counselor will assist in the academic advising for current Bioengineering majors, as well as help with recruitment and outreach efforts to reach prospective student audiences on the UW campus and with Community and Technical College partners, to meet departmental goals for transfer student admission. POSITION PURPOSE This part time position will also support prospective students through the departmental application process and help with new student orientation for transfer students. Advising is a fast-paced, multifaceted field, in which this position will often be multitasking in different capacities (i.e., student meetings, academic services staff meetings, committee meetings) throughout the work day. There are often competing time demands that require excellent organizational skills. This position will collaborate with many different of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, advising colleagues, Department and College-level leadership, and the general public. This position requires flexibility, resourcefulness, and occasionally independent work/decision making. The Academic Counselor position supports the University's primary objectives by providing academic guidance and mentorship to undergraduate students to enhance their academic, professional and personal development. This position will be integral to the holistic support of approximately 300 declared majors, in addition to supporting approximately 50 prospective students planning to apply through the capacity constrained admissions process in spring quarter. The Academic Counselor will also assist in event coordination within the department, including large-scale academic events and departmental celebrations, like the Department of Bioengineering Capstone Showcase and departmental graduation. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Academic Advising (50%) - Advise declared Bioengineering majors on curriculum and assist in creating an educational development plan to achieve student goals. - Monitor student satisfactory progress and provide support responsive to individual student needs. - Collaborate with colleagues in the Department and the College of Engineering to provide professional development support and programming. - Develop and modify advising materials and counseling resources such as handouts, handbooks, and web-based resources. Keep internal and external resources (department websites and Canvas pages) up-to-date and accessible to current and prospective students. - Interpret and communicate College of Engineering and UW policies for undergraduate students; advise department faculty, staff, and students on policy requirements; identify, propose, and implement changes to department practices in response to policy changes. - Assist in the implementation of new initiatives for undergraduate students that enhance advising services and support retention goals. Outreach, Recruitment, and Events (30%) - Assist in creating and implementing outreach plans to help meet departmental recruitment goals and degree targets. Build relationships with Washington State Community and Technical College advising colleagues to increase transfer matriculation. - Serve as a departmental representative at recruitment and outreach events at Washington State community colleges and relevant on-campus events. - Assist with day-of-event coordination for undergraduate orientations, the Bioengineering Capstone Showcase, departmental graduation, and other events, as needed. Program Administration (20%) - Support the chair of the Undergraduate Admissions Committee by serving as a member of the Committee. Duties include, but are not limited to, hosting admissions information sessions, providing applicant support, participating in holistic admissions reviews, and assessing the admissions process for improvement. - Manage student files in accordance with department procedures and in compliance with university records retention schedules. - Produce and analyze undergraduate program data to propose curricular and program-level improvements. Pay Rate Information The salary information provided below is for a full-time position and will be prorated for part-time. Minimum Requirements: Bachelors Degree in a general or related field. At least two years of experience in a higher education environment, preferably in advising or student services, or equivalent experience. Desired Qualifications: Master's degree in a related field. Demonstrated strong interpersonal communications skills. Familiarity with University database systems. Experience in holistic student support practices.
