Job title: Surratt House Museum - History/Museum Program Assistant - Seasonal/Year-Round Company: Job description: Description The History/Museum Program Assistant is a front-facing staff member of the Surratt House Museum team. Candidate will be responsible for providing a welcoming, accessible, and engaging experience for all visitors. Employee will be cross-trained to function as an interpretive guide, an admissions specialist, and a gift shop representative. This position pays at a rate of $16.00 per hour to $18.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. This is a part-time, hourly position of up to 15-20 hours a week. Weekend and evening availability required. Flexibility is provided for students enrolled in college CHIEF OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION: Primary duties are to Enhance the Visitor Experience: Quality and Quantity (from the NHRD 4 Pillars) by creating a welcoming environment that encourages a diversity of visitors to interact with the Historic House, Visitor Center, and Research/Library Center, in an emotionally and intellectually impactful way. NATURAL AND HISTORIC RESOURCES DIVISION FOUR PILLARS • Enhance the Visitor Experience: Quality and Quantity • Leave a Legacy: Transforming Education into Activism • Strengthen Inclusivity, Diversity, and Belonging • Act with Honesty, Integrity, Respect, and Trust ABOUT THE MUSEUM: The Surratt House Museum was founded more than 47 years ago as a site dedicated to fostering an appreciation for the history and culture of 19th century Maryland and Prince George's County, with particular emphasis on the crucial years of 1840-1865. It sought to interpret the impact of this period on our national history as well as on the family of John and Mary Surratt, who became entangled in the web of conspiracy surrounding the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Continuing research in the field is encouraged, and the Museum serves as an educational bridge for scholars, staff-both professional and volunteer-and guests. Today, the Museum is transforming its traditional narrative into one that is more inclusive, diverse, and relevant through the development of impactful interpretation, programming, and exhibits. Examples of Important Duties • Serve and engage visitors in the Museum's various spaces, including the Visitor Center, Historic House, and the James Hall Research Center. • Manage the Museum's retail operations, including admissions and gift shop. Provide input for needed improvement. • Communicate with visitors about upcoming events/programs, respond to inquiries, and resolve issues. • Manage the volunteer and recruitment initiatives (supervision, scheduling, training, guidance) and ensure compliance of the NHRD's Four Pillars, AAM best practices, and museum policies. • Evaluate and provide feedback about visitor attendance and experience. • Compiles end-of-day revenue reconciliations. • Serves as a designated weekend manager for coverage of weekends and late hours. • Assist with marketing and communications for promotion of activities of the organization. • Advocate for Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, Equity needs, and experiences of visitors through exhibits and programs. • Contribute to the planning, development, and coordination of programs and events. • Perform any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above. Minimum Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess the following, 1-2 years minimum: • Two years of college coursework and one to two years of customer service experience, ideally in a museum or retail environment. • Cash-handling and operational management experience preferred. • Excellent Interpersonal and customer service skills. • Must be able to work independently, set priorities, and follow and meet deadlines. • Fluency in one or more languages in addition to English is a plus. • Must be available to work holidays, evenings, and weekends based on operational needs. • Proficiencies in MS Office Suite (especially Excel, Word and Outlook); Experience with or willingness to learn the Parks Direct and Rec-track point-of-sale system • Some experience as a project manager in a museum or related cultural institution setting. • Some experience working with the public in either an educational or retail capacity required. • Have the ability to climb, stoop, bend, reach, walk, sit or stand for long periods of time. • Must be able to lift at least up to thirty (30) pounds. • Experience supervising volunteers, including delegating tasks and setting priorities. • Excellent organizational skills and outstanding verbal and written communication skill.
