Posting Summary Provide day-to-day management and execution of media relations activities that build, sustain, and protect the university's regional, national, and global reputation as a leading public research university. Raise awareness of the breadth of UVM's research, teaching, and engagement successes across colleges, schools, centers, and institutes. Write and edit news releases and stories for internal and external audiences. Build and maintain relationships with regional, national, and global media outlets. Pitch stories to journalists, editors, and others. Serve as back-up University Spokesperson on scheduled weekends and as needed. Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience) Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, digital media, or related field and at least 6 years' relevant experience. Excellent writing/editing skills. Experience writing, pitching, and placing news stories. Professional competency in at least three of these six areas: • Messaging strategy • Social media • Crisis communications • Emergency operations • Media training • News release writing Familiarity with technology solutions for news distribution and media analytics (e.g., Muck Rack, Cision, MediaHQ, etc.) Excellent organizational, project management, written, and verbal communications skills required. Ability to complete projects within established deadlines. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Desirable Qualifications Experience working in higher education, corporate communications, creative agency, non-profit or other complex organization. Strategic thinker, planner, and facilitator. Experience communicating to internal and remote audiences, using multiple types of channels and media. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of leadership, including people from a variety of backgrounds. Other Information This position regularly requires the handling of confidential, sensitive management information.
